Indonesia has entrusted Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation (Toshiba) to supply a steam turbine and generator for Unit 2 of the Patuha Geothermal Plant, located in West Java province. This order, placed by PT Inti Karya Persada Tehnik (IKPT), is part of the national efforts to address rapidly growing electricity demand and reduce carbon emissions.

The new unit, operational in 2027, will add an extra 60.3 MW of production capacity. This project brings Patuha’s total capacity to 110 MW, reinforcing its role in developing geothermal energy, a strategic pillar of Indonesia’s energy transition.

A National Strategy Focused on Geothermal Energy

With an estimated geothermal capacity of approximately 30 GW, Indonesia ranks as the second-largest global producer in this field. The country has integrated this resource into its “Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL 2021-2030),” aiming for a total capacity increase of 40.6 GW by 2030, with 3.35 GW contributed by geothermal energy.

The Patuha plant, located about 200 km from Jakarta, represents a key example of this strategy. By doubling its capacity, the project contributes to both stabilizing the country’s energy supply and achieving its carbon neutrality goal by 2060.

Toshiba’s Role in Indonesia’s Geothermal Landscape

A major player in Indonesia’s geothermal sector, Toshiba has already supplied equipment for several key installations, including Sarulla, Lumut Balai, and the first unit of Patuha. In total, the company has delivered six turbines and generators with a combined capacity of 311 MW.

The performance of Toshiba’s equipment for Patuha Unit 1, particularly with the integration of the EtaPRO™ IoT solution for real-time monitoring and predictive maintenance, was instrumental in this new collaboration.

A Commitment to Sustainable Solutions

Takehiko Matsushita, Vice President of Toshiba’s Power Systems Division, stated that this order reflects the company’s commitment to supporting a sustainable energy transition. “Our proven solutions in the geothermal sector will continue to play a key role in Indonesia’s energy development while addressing global environmental challenges,” he said.

With a product range spanning 1 MW to 200 MW, Toshiba positions itself as a reliable partner for geothermal projects on an international scale while actively contributing to the energy transformation in emerging economies like Indonesia.
