Indonesia announces the auction of two geothermal working areas (WKPs) by the end of 2022.

Geothermal zones at auction

In Indonesia, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), is auctioning two geothermal working areas (WKP). The executive director of the New Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (EBTKE) provides details. The two target areas are Way Ratai WKP and Nage WKP.

The Executive Director of EBTKE (New Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation), Dadan Kusdiana, says:

“I also want to inform you that the government is going to issue a public tender for Way Ratai and Nage. So we will do that by the end of the year.”

Way Ratai WKP is located in the regency of Pesawaran, Lampung. Nage WKP is located in Ngada regency, East Nusa Tenggara.

An unexplained delay

The Way Ratai geothermal work area has a potential reserve of 105MW. In addition, the site covers an area of 70,710 hectares. This WKP, offered at auction in 2015, the consortium composed of PT Optima Nusantara Energi and Enel Green Power won it in 2016.

The fixed price for electricity is $0.13/kWh. The site was to become operational in 2022 with a capacity of 55MW. However, the consortium chose to withdraw before returning the geothermal license for Way Ratai WKP.
