AM Green Ammonia B.V. confirms the final investment decision for its project in Kakinada, in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The project, which targets production of one million tonnes of green ammonia per year by 2026, is part of a wider strategy to produce 5 million tonnes by 2030.
The initiative is based on the conversion of an existing urea plant into a green ammonia production unit.
The majority of production will be destined for export to European markets, in line with the European Union’s Renewable Fuels Standard.

Technology partnerships and energy supply

For this project, AM Green is working in partnership with John Cockerill, which will supply alkaline pressure electrolyzers with a total capacity of 1.3 GW.
These electrolyzers, essential to the production of green hydrogen, are powered by a 4,500 MW hybrid energy capacity, combining solar, wind and 950 MW pumped storage.
Half of this energy capacity is already secured via a 25-year power purchase agreement with NTPC.
The remainder will be supplied by Gentari, the company’s shareholder.

Impact on the ammonia market

The commissioning of this production unit at Kakinada is in response to growing demand for green ammonia, particularly in Europe, where regulatory requirements for renewable fuels are tightening.
The project also advances India’s national ambition to produce 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen per year by 2030, a volume equivalent to 20% of the national target.
This initiative supports strategies for energy diversification and improved industrial efficiency in the fertilizer sector and other energy-intensive industries.
