In Jinzhai, China, Anhui Jinzhai Pumped Storage Power Co, LTD, selects GE Hydro Solutions to supply four turbines.

New turbines

In Jinzhai, GE Hydro Solutions will supply four new 300MW pumped storage turbines. The company will also supply generator-motors and other equipment for the Anhui Jinzhai Power Plant. It is a pumped storage power plant located in Jinzhai County, Anhui Province.

The first two units received deliveries successfully and are connected to the network. This 1.2GW project will help China reach its goal of building more than 200 pumped storage stations. The total combined capacity is expected to reach 270GW by 2025.

The annual generation capacity of the project is about 1.4 times the annual household electricity consumption in Jinzhai. This plant will save up to 89,500 tons of coal. In addition, it will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 179,000 tons each year.

Efficient technology

These pumped storage units will act in Jinzhai as giant batteries that will help solve grid stability problems for the province. Water from the lower reservoir fills the upper reservoir during periods of excess energy. During periods of demand, the water in the upper reservoir is released to generate electricity through the turbine.

Pascal Radue , President and CEO of GE Hydro Solutions, said:

“Once the project is fully commissioned, the giant 1.2 GW hydro battery will provide a high level of flexibility and reliability to the local power grid. This demonstrates Pumped Storage Solutions’ ability to solve some of the biggest challenges associated with the energy transition in China and beyond.”

This project is in addition to the 8.2 GW of pumped storage solutions that GE was delivering in China. Thus, they represent more than 25% of the installed base in the country.

Worldwide, more than 30% of hydroelectric storage plants are powered by GE technology. GE Renewable Energy was installing over 400GW of renewable energy. In addition, the company equips over 90% of the world’s utilities with its network solutions.
