Idku, Egypt, is undergoing a decarbonization study for its LNG facility by a coalition of companies.

Technical cooperation

The project in Idku benefits from the grouping of different players, Bechtel, Enppi, Petrojet, Baker Hughes, GE Digital, HSBC and NBE. Moreover, this project is part of a broader collaboration between the coalition and the Egyptian government. In addition, Bechtel leads the Coalition for Decarbonization assigned by Egyptian LNG.

The feasibility study covers the implementation of a flare-less system at the Egyptian LNG export terminal in Idku. It will evaluate opportunities for routine flaring recovery to reduce methane emissions from the LNG facility. The study is expected to move into the engineering design phase in early 2023.

The project in Idku is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It also aims to optimize fuel consumption and operating time of rotating equipment. This will lead to a reduction in operating costs and improved production.

A partnership with the government

Egypt’s climate change strategy is based on decarbonizing existing oil and gas facilities. This partnership to decarbonize LNG production is important forEgypt on the international stage. In addition, the Egyptian president signed the global methane commitment in June 2022.

The Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Mr. Tarek El-Molla, said on this occasion:

“I am very proud that the Egyptian oil and gas sector is making a significant contribution to the achievement of key strategic objectives and priorities: accelerating decarbonization and applying cutting-edge technologies and solutions in this area. I am pleased that the sector is working with our partners to take such initiatives and promote these priorities.”

In addition, the recovery of flares will reduce fuel consumption for local businesses. This solution will also improve production and reduce operating costs.

In addition, following the signing of a trilateral agreement with the EU and Iceland, Egyptian LNG will provide reliable and clean energy to Europe. In addition, the partners hope that this study will have a positive impact on flaring in Egypt and beyond Idku. Finally, this project is part of a larger program to decarbonize oil and gas facilities.
