In Greece, the projects financed by Korkia will develop solar parks to support the production of renewable energy.
A Finnish investor
In Greece, the Finnish company Korkia is investing in new solar energy projects for the region of Thessaly and the island of Crete. Solar energy projects are planned with energy storage to help balance the electrical system. The company is targeting over 1GW of renewable capacity, with projects including energy storage to help balance the power system.
Korkia partners with GH Energy in Thessaly and AA Sunshine in Crete. Their goal is to reach the construction phase by 2024. On the other hand, George Haloulis of GH Energy states:
“We have been developing solar projects for six years. Thessaly is known as the central transmission hub of Greece and has good land for solar projects. There is a lot of growth potential and we see great value in combining solar projects with energy storage. We look forward to working with Korkia.”
Two submarine cables will be laid between the island of Crete and the Greek mainland.
They will turn Crete into a photovoltaic hub. This hub will provide renewable energy to the Greek mainland. A first cable already exists while the construction of the second cable will be completed by 2023.
A solar hub
The main interest of these projects is to integrate the island into the main transportation system. But it is also about strengthening the transportation network. In addition, the cables could allow Crete to become a solar energy factory.
Greece hopes to produce more than half of its electricity from renewable energy by 2030. The EU is also supporting investment in renewable energy in Greece. Korkia’s local partnerships are committed to achieving Greece’s goals.
The goal is to shift Greece from fossil fuels (coal, gas) to renewable energy production. Manos Androulakis of AA Sunshine states:
“We are very pleased to be teaming up with Korkia. There is no doubt that we need to find alternatives to gas and other fossil fuels. At AA Sunshine, we have extensive knowledge of renewable energy development and an understanding of local conditions in Crete. This will allow us to effectively accelerate the development pipeline.”
Therefore, Korkia and its partners are committed to Greece’s energy transition while adapting to the constraints of the continent.
