Ilmatar and Finsilva are developing a 200MW wind farm around Vermassalo in Virrat, North Pirkanmaa, Finland.

A ten-year plan

Ilmatar and Finsilva will establish the construction area in the Vermassalo region. The site is owned by the forestry and natural capital company Finsilva. Ilmatar builds and owns renewable energy facilities.

The planning and permitting process for the Vermassalo wind farm will begin in late 2022. Thus, construction will begin in 2025-2026 and electricity production will start around 2027-2028. The provisional size of the project area is approximately 3,200 hectares, allowing for the installation of 20 to 25 wind turbines.

The location and number of turbines will be decided in more detail during the planning process. The procedure will take into consideration reports, opinions and discussions with interest groups. In addition, an environmental impact assessment will accompany the project.

A Finnish partnership

Ilmatar and Finsilva announce a partnership that provides a good basis for the development of long-term projects. The vice president of projects at Ilmatar, Erkka Saario, announces:

“The values of our companies are a good match, as responsibility, local presence, and consideration of and engagement with local interest groups and communities play an important role in each company’s business model. We are also pleased that our projects will have a broad and long-term impact on the regional economy of North Pirkanmaa.”

The Vermassalo wind power project will explore the synergy benefits of the Tuuramäki and Lylyharju projects.

The Vermassalo project area is located approximately seven kilometers from Ilmatar’s Tuuramäki wind power project. In addition, Ilmatar’s Lylyharju wind power project is located nearby, about 25 kilometers away. The synergy offered by these projects will include the power transmission solution.

Ilmatar builds onshore wind power facilities in six wind farms with a total of 63 turbines. Thus, the total capacity will be 350MW. The company’s public onshore wind projects for the next few years total 2200MW of capacity. Finsilva owns approximately 130,000 hectares of forest, most of which is located in southern and central Finland.
