Iberdrola, a Spanish electric utility, is strengthening its leadership in innovative and renewable energy by investing more than €40 million in Spain’s first hybrid wind and solar power plant.

Two photovoltaic plants for a wind farm: the hybrid project in Burgos

The project involves the installation of two photovoltaic plants of 41 and 33 MW in Burgos, Castilla y León, to hybridize the 69 MW BaCa-Ballestas and Casetona wind power complex. The incorporation of solar modules optimizes the use of the grid and minimizes the environmental impact, allowing for stable and efficient renewable generation.

The development of this project involves the contribution of 360 professionals and has an important local component, contributing to the boosting of the economy and employment in Castilla y León. Indeed, Iberdrola promotes renewable energies as an engine of rural development, allowing the creation of local jobs in the villages surrounding the wind farms and photovoltaic plants.

In addition, hybrid plants share infrastructure and are located on land already used for renewable energy production, resulting in much less environmental impact than two independent plants. This initiative is part of Iberdrola’s commitment to Castilla y León, which consolidates its position as an important center for the development of renewable energy, with more than 5,150 MW already operated by the company in the region.

Massive investment in renewable energy: Iberdrola’s 2025 strategic plan

The Iberdrola Group has been involved in renewable energy and storage for more than two decades, making it a world leader in this field. By the end of 2022, the company will have 40,000 MW of renewable energy in operation, with 7,675 MW to be executed in the next four years. In addition, Iberdrola is a leader in energy storage, with an installed capacity of 4,473 MW using pumped storage technology and more than 200 MW in batteries.

The company’s 2025 strategic plan calls for a €17 billion investment in renewable activities, which will increase its installed renewable capacity from 12,100 MW to 52,000 MW by 2025. This includes 3,100 MW of onshore wind, 6,300 MW of photovoltaics, 1,800 MW of offshore wind, 700 MW of batteries and 200 MW of hydro.

Iberdrola, by investing in the first hybrid wind and solar power plant in Spain, is strengthening its position as a leader in the development of renewable energies and contributing to the revitalization of the local economy. This initiative optimizes the use of the grid and minimizes the environmental impact, confirming the growing importance of renewable energy in the energy transition.
