Hy2gen Canada Inc, a subsidiary of Hy2gen AG, has been selected by Quebec’s Ministère de l’Économie, de l’Innovation et de l’Énergie to receive an allocation of electricity for the production of green hydrogen in Baie-Comeau. This project will contribute to local economic development and job creation.

A Crucial Step for the Current Project

Hy2gen Canada Inc, the Canadian subsidiary of Hy2gen AG, has been selected to receive an electricity allocation from Hydro-Québec. This electricity will be used to power a green hydrogen and green ammonia production plant in Baie-Comeau. This is a decisive step for the Courant project, enabling FEED to begin and bringing the final investment decision closer. The project plans to start construction of the green ammonia plant in the second half of 2026, with initial production scheduled for 2029, subject to Hydro-Québec’s connection schedule. For Hy2gen, this is a significant step forward, adding to its production of green hydrogen in Germany since 2023.

Strategic and economic benefits

A constant supply of hydroelectric power will ensure continuous operation of the electrolysis process, transforming water into oxygen and hydrogen. This green hydrogen will then be combined with nitrogen produced on site to create green ammonia. Courant’s location offers short transport routes to end customers, facilitating distribution and reducing logistics costs. Cyril Dufau-Sansot, CEO of Hy2gen, expressed his satisfaction:

“We are honored by the Quebec government’s decision to allocate a block of energy to our Courant project in Baie-Comeau. This recognition validates our vision and commitment to producing green hydrogen in Quebec, a giant step forward for Hy2gen Canada and the renewable energy industry.”

Strategic partnerships and future prospects

Pietro Di Zann, Director of Hy2gen Canada Inc. added:

“We thank the Quebec government, Hydro-Québec and the Baie-Comeau community for their support in developing this flagship project. We look forward to working with everyone to advance the project and reap the benefits for Quebec.”

Hy2gen, through its worldwide subsidiaries, aims to become the leading supplier of renewable hydrogen. The progress of the Courant project represents a further step towards large-scale, cost-effective production of renewable energy solutions such as hydrogen and green ammonia. The award of the power supply contract demonstrates the confidence of the decision-making institutions in Hy2gen and affirms its position as a serious player in the global renewable energy market.

About Hy2gen Canada

Hy2gen Canada Inc. is a 100% subsidiary of Hy2gen AG, based in Wiesbaden, Germany. The company develops, finances, builds and operates facilities for the production of renewable hydrogen and hydrogen-derived “e-fuels”: green ammonia, e-methanol and sustainable aviation fuel. Founded in 2017, the company is a pioneer in this field, with 12 GW of electrolysis-based projects under development in Germany, France, Norway, Canada and the USA.
Hy2gen benefits from major strategic and financial partnerships, including Trafigura, TechnipEnergies, CDPQ, Mirova and the Hy24 infrastructure fund. In early 2022, Hy2gen raised €200 million, marking the largest private investment focused on green hydrogen to date, confirming its credibility and financial strength with the world’s leading hydrogen companies.
