The Hungarian MOL Group recently inaugurated a 10-megawattgreen hydrogen plant in Százhalombatta. With this investment of 22 million euros, the company is affirming its commitment to carbon neutrality and sustainable mobility. The plant is expected to reduce the Danube refinery’s carbon dioxide emissions by 25,000 tonnes a year, underlining the importance of this initiative in the company’s “SHAPE TOMORROW” strategy.

Advanced technology for sustainable production

The plant uses a Plug Power electrolysis unit to produce around 1,600 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. Powered by renewable energy sources, this technology breaks down water into hydrogen and oxygen without polluting by-products. The pure oxygen produced is another notable environmental benefit, with 8 to 9 tonnes of oxygen generated per tonne of hydrogen.

Growing regional ambitions

After Százhalombatta, MOL plans to extend this technology to Rijeka, Croatia, and Bratislava. These projects illustrate MOL’s ambition to strengthen the region’s sustainability and self-sufficiency. MOL CEO, József Molnár, stresses that this initiative is crucial to significantly reducing the carbon footprint and improving regional competitiveness.

Innovative partnership with Plug Power

Plug CEO Andy Marsh expresses his pride in equipping MOL with cutting-edge technology, propelling the hydrogen economy and supporting greener refinery operations.

The new site doesn’t just green MOL’s industrial operations; it also promises solutions for all future hydrogen industry and mobility. This milestone not only represents progress for MOL, but also heralds a breakthrough for the energy sector as a whole.
