Meld Energy has received approval from East Riding of Yorkshire Council to build a green hydrogen production facility at Saltend Chemicals Park. The project, valued at £250 million, is expected to meet 30% of the park’s hydrogen demand, boosting the region’s production capacity.
Project background and objectives
Saltend Chemicals Park, a key industrial hub, is home to companies such as BP Petrochemicals Technology, Vivergo Fuels, Yara, Mitsubishi Chemicals UK, Ineos, and Air Products. The plant will produce green hydrogen by electrolysis, with the aim of replacing natural gas in industrial processes and diversifying energy sources. Meld Energy is also aiming to access UK government funding as part of the Hydrogen Production Business Model. This financial support is essential to achieve a total hydrogen production capacity of 875 megawatts nationwide.
Economic and strategic impact
The project is strategic for the Humber region, known as the UK’s major industrial hub. The new hydrogen production facility is expected to stimulate the local economy, create jobs and attract investment. It will also boost the competitiveness of local businesses by providing them with an alternative, more stable source of energy. Geoff Holmes, CEO of px Group, emphasizes:
“Meld’s approval for this facility reinforces Saltend Chemicals Park as a preferred location for industrial and energy investments.”
Future developments and prospects
Chris Smith, CEO of Meld Energy, said:
“This project is a major step forward in our development plans in the Humber. We are determined to move forward quickly and reduce the cost of the energy transition for our customers.”
This project represents a significant step forward for the UK hydrogen sector, positioning Meld Energy as a key player in the development of this new industry.
