H2Évora, a renewable hydrogen demonstration plant in Portugal, is being inaugurated by Ballard Power and Fusion Fuel.

A demonstration unit

H2Évora consists of 15 HEVO-Solar units. The plant has the capacity to produce 15 tons of renewable hydrogen per year. Thus, it will avoid the emission of 135 tons of carbon dioxide per year.

The H2Évora installation includes a 200 kilowatt FCwaveTM fuel cell module supplied by Ballard Power. It is used to convert renewable hydrogen into electricity. This allows Fusion Fuel to sell energy to the power grid during periods of peak demand.

A political will

Frederico Figueira de Chaves, co-director and CFO of Fusion Fuel, says:

“We are thrilled to finally be able to commission our H2Évora project, Portugal’s first fully integrated solar-renewable hydrogen plant. Although this modest facility has been superseded by some of the larger projects we are developing, its value cannot be underestimated. We can now expect H2Évora to provide emission-free electricity to the grid for many years, demonstrating the flexibility of renewable hydrogen and our HEVO-Solar solution, especially considering the prolonged energy crisis in European markets. The facility will also serve as an important testing ground for our R&D team as we continue to deploy future iterations of our technology. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have contributed to the achievement of this crucial milestone.”

For Ballard Power, H2Évora also marks the commissioning of its first FCwaveTM fuel cell module. The company also emphasizes the important step for the industry in the fight against carbon emissions.

Finally, Portugal’s Secretary of State for Energy confirms his country’s commitment to being at the forefront of renewablehydrogen. Portugal relies on these companies to achieve its climate goals. Fusion Fuel and Ballard Power, together with H2Évora, can contribute to the success of this ambition.
