H-TEC SYSTEMS builds a plant for the production of green hydrogen

Hydrogen company H-TEC SYSTEMS is building a state-of-the-art, carbon-neutral production and development facility in Hamburg, Germany, as part of the PEP.IN research project. This plant will allow the production of up to 5 gigawatts of PEM electrolyzers and will be climate neutral.

The hydrogen specialist H-TEC SYSTEMS is building a state-of-the-art, climate-neutral production and development facility for PEM electrolyzer cells in Hamburg. Together with representatives from politics and business, the official groundbreaking ceremony for a new plant of the hydrogen specialist H-TEC SYSTEMS took place in the district of Rahlstedt in Hamburg.

H-TEC SYSTEMS strengthens its position in the hydrogen market

In the future, the H-TEC SYSTEMS Stack Manufacturing & Development Center will combine development, production, testing and battery service at one location and employ several hundred people in the long term. The construction of the automated plant is part of the PEP.IN research project and is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) via the H₂Giga pilot project for hydrogen generation. The objective of the project is to research new and innovative processes for the competitive mass production of PEM cells and electrolyzers in Germany in order to make green hydrogen affordable and profitable. In addition to the proven S450 batteries, H-TEC SYSTEMS will also develop and produce a new generation of performance-enhanced batteries in the Stack Manufacturing & Development Center.

With the new production site in Hamburg, H-TEC SYSTEMS strengthens its position in the hydrogen market and makes a decisive contribution to the global hydrogen initiative. Together with the parent company, MAN Energy Solutions, H-TEC SYSTEMS has deliberately chosen the new location in Hamburg and is thus clearly committed to Germany as a production location. The supply chains required for battery production are also mainly based on German and European procurement operations.

The new climate neutral site

The new building is being constructed on a 35,000 square meter site in Victoria Park, a commercial area in Hamburg’s Rahlstedt district, located on the border with Schleswig-Holstein. The hydrogen specialist H-TEC SYSTEMS is building a state-of-the-art, climate-neutral production and development facility on a total area of 18,000 square meters. The new building has a production area of 11,400 square meters.

Photovoltaic systems of up to 2 megawatts will be installed on the building and in the adjacent multi-story parking lot to generate renewable energy. Heat for the building will be supplied by the district heating network. Rainwater harvesting tanks provide water for green spaces. Parking spaces for cars and bicycles are equipped with electric charging stations. The intention is to obtain the Platinum Standard certification, the highest quality award given by the German Council for Sustainable Construction. A rock wall is provided for the company’s employees in the outdoor area. Natural recreation areas and a 300-square-meter rooftop terrace cleverly complement the sophisticated design concept. The project is being implemented as a joint venture between Garbe Industrial Real Estate GmbH and the Jebens Group.
