Greenbacker acquires a 54 MW pre-operational wind farm in Illinois from PowerWorks. With this transaction, Greenbacker continues to expand its wind energy portfolio in the Midwest.
First asset in Illinois
Through a subsidiary, the company is purchasing a 54 MW wind farm to be built from PowerWorks. Greenbacker is expanding its presence in the Midwest and entering a new market with its first wind asset in Illinois.
Charles Wheeler, CEO of Greenbacker, emphasizes the importance of this project:
“We are thrilled that our partnership with PowerWorks has allowed the Greenbacker Wind Farm to expand significantly into new territory. Not only is Panther Creek our first wind asset providing cheaper, clean energy in the Illinois market, but when completed, it will also be our largest wind project in the entire Midwest region.”
The wind farm, currently in the final stages of design, is scheduled to reach commercial operation in 2024. Once completed, it must produce enough clean energy to offset more than 130,000 metric tons of carbon per year.
Thus, the project is in line with the region’s energy transition objective.
Greenbacker expands wind portfolio in Illinois
With this transaction, Greenbacker continues to expand its wind energy portfolio in Illinois. In fact, it currently has more than 190 MW of wind assets in operation.
The project, located in Pike County, will be Greenbacker’s largest clean energy asset. A state in which the renewable energy company has also established a significant solar presence. Charles Wheeler emphasizes this dimension:

On the other hand, Morgan McGovert, senior vice president of PowerWorks, points out the economic virtue of the project:
