McPhy Energy, a company specializing in the production and distribution of low-carbon hydrogen equipment, announced the signing of a new contract with Plansee Group for the supply, assembly and commissioning of a 4 MW McLyzer 800-30. The electrolyzer will be operated at Plansee Group’s manufacturing site in Reutte, Austria, where green hydrogen will be used to produce carbon-neutral high-performance metals for various high-tech applications such as semiconductors, electronics or medicine.

A highly innovative low-carbon metal production project

This project is a highly innovative low-carbon metal production project and a milestone in metallurgy. The equipment provided will allow the site to progressively replace production with green hydrogen produced with renewable energy. The first delivery of green hydrogen is expected by the end of 2024.

The electrolyser will help Plansee Group to halve its CO2 emissions at the Reutte site by 2025. Currently, the production of hydrogen from natural gas represents 50% of its CO2 emissions at the Reutte production site. Plansee Group’s goal is to supply the site with hydrogen produced without CO2 emissions by 2030.

In addition to the supply of the electrolyzer, McPhy has signed a long-term maintenance contract to ensure reliability and operational availability. With this contract, McPhy registers a new reference in the industrial field.

Plansee Group and McPhy Energy commit to sustainable solutions in metallurgy

Jean-Baptiste Lucas, CEO of McPhy, said, “As energy efficiency has become a key trigger for green hydrogen investments, especially in hard to address markets, we are delighted to announce our support to Plansee Group in making this project a reality.” He added: “In addition, as the operations will take place in Austria, this collaboration will allow us to expand our footprint in the DACH region, where we are already well established with our site in Wildau.”

Plansee Group specializes in products made from molybdenum and tungsten materials, covering the entire value chain from ore concentration to custom tools and components. The product portfolio includes over 100,000 different products and tools. This enables Plansee Group to create high-tech devices for everyday use such as smartphones, as well as sustainable and efficient solutions for mobility, energy supply and industrial manufacturing. In the fiscal year 2021/22, Plansee Group achieved consolidated sales of EUR 2.02 billion with 11,174 employees.

Indeed, this project is an important step towards the production of low-carbon metals and the use of green hydrogen. With the support of McPhy Energy, Plansee Group is firmly committed to reducing its carbon footprint and promoting sustainable solutions in metallurgy.
