Germany is preparing to welcome its first LNG terminal at Stade, in the north of the country, with a capacity of 12 Gm3/year.
The project is currently awaiting approval from the Bundesnetzagentur.
2 new LNG terminals under study in Germany
The future LNG terminal at Stade will be complemented by a second terminal at Brunsbuttel with a capacity of 8 Gm3/year.
Commercial operations are scheduled to start in 2026.
There are currently no similar facilities in Germany.
In March 2021, Belgian gas infrastructure operator Fluxys joined Hanseatic Energy Hub ‘s Stade terminal program as a shareholder and long-term operator.
Other aborted projects
Moreover, these projects follow a series of setbacks.
An initial project for a 10 Gm3/year LNG import terminal at Wilhelmshaven was abandoned.
The Brunsbuttel site was also abandoned.
No offer to take over these projects has yet been transmitted to the authorities.
