Framatome has been selected by the Spanish operator CNAT (Centrales Nucleares Almaraz-Trillo) to ensure the long-term supply of fuel for tranche 1 of the Trillo nuclear power plant in Spain. This strategic partnership marks a significant step in the plant’s operational continuity by guaranteeing a reliable and secure supply of HTP (High Thermal Performance) fuel assemblies.

The contract, initially lasting nine years covering the period from 2026 to 2035, includes nine successive deliveries of fuel assemblies as well as related services. This collaboration could be extended beyond 2035, depending on the potential extension of the Trillo nuclear plant’s operational life. Framatome, as the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) of the plant, plays a crucial role in maintaining the facility’s performance and safety.

A Strengthened Long-Term Partnership

Lionel Gaiffe, Senior Executive Vice President of the Fuel Business Unit at Framatome, expressed his satisfaction with the continuation of the partnership with CNAT. “CNAT is a long-time customer, and Framatome has been supplying fuel to the Trillo plant since its operation began in the late 1980s,” he stated. “We are pleased to continue supporting CNAT and Trillo with the long-term delivery of our safe, reliable, and high-performance HTP fuel.”

The HTP fuel assembly represents a technological advancement developed by Framatome, incorporating a specific spacer grid that enhances the reactor’s thermal performance. To date, assemblies of this type have been loaded in 45 reactors worldwide, attesting to their reliability and efficiency.

Commitment to Safety and Efficiency

Borja Rosell, Vice President of Technical Services at CNAT, highlighted the importance of this contract for the future of the Trillo plant. “This contract confirms CNAT’s commitment to the long-term operation of the Trillo nuclear power plant, thanks to safety, reliability, and efficiency-focused solutions provided by a partner like Framatome,” he stated.

The Trillo nuclear power plant, located northeast of Madrid, is equipped with a pressurized water reactor with a gross capacity of 1066 MW. Since its commissioning in 1988, Framatome has been providing the necessary fuel assemblies and services for its optimal operation.

Future Perspectives and Developments

With this contract, Framatome consolidates its position as a leader in the nuclear fuel sector, particularly for pressurized water reactors. The ongoing collaboration with CNAT also supports Spain’s energy transition initiatives by ensuring stable and sustainable nuclear energy production.

Furthermore, this strategic alliance paves the way for future technological innovations and continuous optimization of nuclear reactor performance. Framatome is committed to investing in research and development to address tomorrow’s energy challenges while adhering to the strictest safety standards.

Conclusion of the Collaboration

The renewal of this contract with CNAT demonstrates the mutual trust between the two entities and their shared commitment to responsible and high-performance nuclear energy. Framatome and CNAT work together to ensure the sustainability and efficiency of the Trillo plant, thus making a significant contribution to Spain’s energy landscape.
