Exergy International has signed an agreement with RentCo Africa Limited to develop a geothermal project in Olkaria, Kenya.
This project will add 67 MWe of capacity, using Flash and Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) technologies.
Exergy will supply eight ORC plants, totalling 30 MWe.
This initiative aims to boost the region’s energy capacity and exploit available geothermal resources more efficiently.

Technology and Expertise

ORC technology efficiently converts thermal energy into electricity.
Exergy, a global provider of clean energy technologies, will contribute its expertise in the design and maintenance of geothermal power plants, as well as its radial flow turbine (ROT) technology.
The project will benefit from ongoing technical support to ensure optimum, sustainable performance of the facilities.

Context of the Geothermal Market in Kenya

In 2023, Kenya was among the top ten countries for installed geothermal capacity, with 985 MWe.
The country is expected to reach 1 GWe by 2024, supported by strategic investments and partnerships.
The Olkaria geothermal fields are key to this expansion, providing a major source of renewable energy and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

Perspectives and Impact on Energy in Africa

This agreement between Exergy and RentCo is crucial for the African energy sector.
It will help improve access to energy in Kenya and demonstrate the potential of renewable resources in Africa.
Collaboration between international and local companies is essential to develop sustainable energy solutions and achieve sustainable development goals.
This agreement between Exergy International and RentCo Africa Limited marks a significant step forward for the development of renewable energy in Kenya.
