The EU (European Union) and Japan announce to intensify the partnership on hydrogen with the signature of a cooperation protocol.
A hydrogen market
The EU and Japan are seeking to stimulate innovation and develop an international hydrogen market. As pioneers in hydrogen technology, the two partners will work together to develop production. In this way, the cooperation will help establish a global hydrogen market.
The EU and Japan specify that the market is based on rules and transparency, without distorting trade and investment. In addition, both partners are committed to achieving climate neutrality by 2050. This desire is part of the energy transition and the EU-Japan Green Alliance.
The EU-Japan Protocol
The protocol signed in Tokyo identifies a set of areas for collaboration on policies, incentives and subsidies towards joint certifications. In addition, they are looking for best practices to develop projects. Finally, they agree to increase education, teaching and professional training in this field.
Brussels and Tokyo have a well-developed energy dialogue covering energy security or LNG. In addition, both parties are aiming for cooperation on methane emissions, which is currently under discussion. Finally, during the EU-Japan summit in May 2021, a green alliance was created where hydrogen is at the heart of this cooperation.
