ERG, a major player in the renewable energy sector, has completed the full modernization (repowering) of the Salemi-Castelvetrano wind farm, located in the province of Trapani, Sicily. This project represents a significant milestone in the company’s strategy to optimize the efficiency of its facilities while strengthening its commitment to the energy transition.
The project involved replacing 30 older turbines with 850 kW capacity each with 18 state-of-the-art machines provided by Vestas, each with a unit capacity of 4.2 MW. The total capacity of the park now stands at 75.6 MW, a significant increase from the previous 25.5 MW. In terms of annual production, the site now delivers 208 GWh, more than quadrupling its initial output of 50 GWh.
Energy and environmental impact
The energy produced by the upgraded park will meet the annual electricity needs of approximately 41,000 households while avoiding 74 kilotons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions annually. This reduction contributes to the decarbonization of the energy sector, a key goal of European climate policies.
The installation also benefits from a 20-year Contract for Difference (CfD), ensuring long-term revenue stability. This approach aligns with ERG’s financial security strategy outlined in its 2024-2026 industrial plan.
A strategy focused on repowering
Paolo Merli, CEO of ERG, emphasized that this project represents the fourth repowering completed by the company in Italy. Together, these initiatives total a combined capacity of 270 MW. Leveraging this experience, the group plans to continue developing its project pipeline in Italy, France, and Germany, in line with its “Value over Volume” strategy.
By adopting cutting-edge technologies, ERG strengthens its role in the energy transition and maximizes the performance of its existing assets. Growth prospects include targeted projects to meet increasing energy demands while adhering to sustainability requirements.
