Energy operator Entergy Texas has formalized a strategic partnership with Kinder Morgan and Golden Pass LNG to secure a competitive and stable natural gas supply to meet the increasing demand in Southeast Texas. This agreement is part of the $1.7 billion Trident Intrastate Pipeline project, designed to improve access to natural gas in the state’s developing areas.
A large-scale project for the region
The 216-mile Trident Intrastate Pipeline will transport natural gas from the Permian Basin and other sources to the Katy hub, then to the industrial and LNG export corridor near Port Arthur. This infrastructure aims to alleviate supply constraints that currently limit industrial and commercial expansion in the region.
Set to be operational in early 2027, the pipeline will initially transport about 1.5 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day, with expansion capabilities reaching up to 2.8 billion cubic feet per day. These volumes will supply both Entergy Texas’ power plants and the industrial and LNG sectors.
Strategic benefits for Entergy Texas
The agreement between Entergy Texas and Kinder Morgan plays a crucial role in the region’s energy roadmap, particularly through the Southeast Texas Energy Plan (STEP Ahead) developed by the power company. By accessing competitive markets via the Katy hub, Entergy Texas aims to reduce fuel costs for its customers while securing a steady energy supply.
Two major power plants, Legend and Lone Star Power Stations, will directly benefit from this enhanced access to natural gas. Additionally, the pipeline connection will improve Entergy Texas’ operational flexibility, particularly through the Spindletop underground storage caverns, which will help manage supply fluctuations.
A driver for regional industrialization
Beyond competitive advantages for the local energy market, this project aligns with the needs of major industrial players and LNG export facilities, including Golden Pass LNG, which will strengthen its supply capabilities. For the operator, this improved natural gas access will support its role as a key LNG supplier in North America.
According to Sital Mody, President of Kinder Morgan Natural Gas, the growing energy demand from Texas’ industries and LNG terminals fully justifies the development of the Trident Intrastate Pipeline. The goal is to ensure a long-term, reliable, and affordable energy supply, contributing to the stability of Texas’ energy infrastructure.
