Eni, one of the world’s leading integrated energy companies, has successfully unloaded the first cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG) at the new Snam regasification terminal in Piombino. This important step was taken today in the presence of the Minister of Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin.
The terminal, with a total processing capacity of 5 billion cubic meters per year, has the potential to meet about 7% of Italy’s gas demand. The LNG was produced at the Damietta liquefaction plant in Egypt, where Eni has made a strategic investment to expand its integrated liquefied gas portfolio.
Eni’s Piombino terminal: a key step for Italy’s energy security
Eni’s acquisition of regasification capacity at the Piombino terminal is an integral part of its strategy to diversify LNG supplies in Italy through its participation gas produced abroad. With an accelerated project development approach and strong relationships in the countries where it operates, Eni has increased the volumes of gas available from Algeria, Libya and Italy. It has increased the number of LNG cargoes from Egypt, Congo, Qatar, Angola, Nigeria, Indonesia and Mozambique. This approach will allow Eni to guarantee gas supply to its customers through a more diversified portfolio.
Eni’s contracted LNG is expected to exceed 18 million tons per year by 2026, double the amount contracted in 2022. This increase confirms the role of LNG as a reliable energy source to support security of supply and the energy transition.
The new regasification capacity in Piombino will play an important role in Eni’s plan to completely replace Russian gas by 2024-2025 and increase the availability of gas for Italy, which could benefit the country’s industrial and economic system in terms of price and competitiveness.
Thus, Eni’s investment in the Piombino terminal and its strategy to diversify its LNG supply through its equity gas are essential steps to ensure a reliable energy supply in Italy.
