ENGIE Chile has obtained the Declaration of Commercial Commissioning (COD) from the National Electricity Coordinator for its Coya solar power plant, located in the municipality of María Elena, in the Antofagasta region. With a generating capacity of 181.25 MWac and 369,432 solar photovoltaic panels, this solar park is the company’s largest contributor of green energy to the National Electric System (SEN).

A new achievement of ENGIE Chile for decarbonization

This fleet provides renewable energy to the equivalent of 73,000 homes, which represents a reduction of 311,293 tons of CO2 pollution per year. In addition, it will be equipped with a 638 MWh battery storage system, called “BESS Coya”, which will provide greater efficiency and flexibility to the SEN. With this initiative, ENGIE Chile is taking an important step in its transformation plan, which has already added about 800 MW of renewable energy to the system.

The CEO of ENGIE Chile, Rosaline Corinthien, said that “obtaining the COD for our Coya solar plant marks the end of the first stage of our transformation plan, with solar and wind power plants. A second stage now begins, consisting of adding new technologies to the development of projects, as is the case of storage systems. In this way, we continue to move forward in our commitment to accelerate the transition to a carbon neutral economy.”

An ENGIE Chile project that is part of a general green energy movement

The Coya solar power plant will also have an innovation in the cleaning of its solar panels, which will be done by robots that do not require water, making it more environmentally sustainable. ENGIE Chile’s General Manager of Renewable Energy, Mathieu Ablard, said that “we are proud to add a new achievement to our transformation plan. The Coya solar plant was a great challenge because it is the largest renewable energy park we have in the country. It shows the commitment of each and every employee who made it possible to provide green energy to the system today.”

ENGIE Chile recently connected the Calama wind farm, the Tamaya solar power plant, the Capricornio solar power plant and acquired its first operating site that produces energy from wind, the San Pedro wind farm. With these initiatives, the company continues to advance its commitment to the transition to a carbon neutral economy.
