Solaria has announced the purchase of 435 MW of photovoltaic modules for its Garoña complex, providing a significant reduction in costs and a major step forward in energy transition.

Solaria, a pioneer in the renewable energies sector, has just finalized the purchase of 435 MW of photovoltaic modules from a leading manufacturer at the attractive price of 9.11 euro cents per watt. This tariff, which is 2.15% lower than the last purchase in December 2023, represents an impressive 71% reduction on 2022 prices, reflecting the positive trend in the competitiveness of photovoltaic technology.

The Garoña project

In 2024, these modules will be installed in Garoña, where Solaria is transforming the former Santa María de Garoña nuclear power plant into a 700 MW photovoltaic complex. This project marks a decisive turning point for the company and the industry, replacing an obsolete, polluting energy source with a sustainable, clean solution. With financial backing from the European Investment Bank and Banco Santander, the project got underway last March, after obtaining the necessary permits.

Economic and social impact

The construction of the four photovoltaic plants will generate substantial economic benefits. In terms of revenue, the project is expected to generate 650 million euros for public authorities over 30 years. What’s more, the project will create 2,400 jobs, with an emphasis on local employment, not to mention the indirect jobs that will result from this initiative. Once operational, the park will provide enough electricity to power 300,000 homes in the province of Burgos, while avoiding the emission of over 335,000 tonnes of CO2 every year.
The Solaria initiative in Garoña is a prime example of how strategic investment in renewable technologies can transform energy infrastructures and benefit the local economy while protecting the environment. This project illustrates the viability and necessity of the energy transition.
