Enel North America, built 1.98 GW of additional utility-scale wind, solar and storage capacity in the U.S. and Canada in 2022. The company also added more than 550 MW of new demand response capacity and an additional 119 MW of distributed energy storage deployed or under contract in 2022.

Enel’s commitment to the United States and Canada towards a zero-carbon economy

Enrico Viale, head of Enel North America, said this expansion of clean energy capacity is part of Enel’s commitment to move the U.S. and Canada toward a zero-carbon economy. The company closed out 2022 by building several clean power plants, such as the 270 MW Blue Jay solar project in Texas and the 250 MW 25 Mile Creek wind project in Oklahoma, among others.

In 2022, Enel also signed 12 power purchase agreements (PPAs) totaling more than 630 MW with customers such as Campbell Soup Company, Thermo Fisher Scientific, McDonald’s, and several members of its North American logistics council. The company also signed virtual power purchase agreements (VPPAs) with Verizon and MathWorks to support the 25 Mile Creek wind project.

Over $200 million in tax revenue

The new projects represent more than $200 million in new tax revenue for communities and more than $210 million in payments to landowners. At the same time, Enel also announced the addition of Enel X Way, a new branch dedicated to electric mobility, and Gridspert, an optimization platform for electric networks.

A growing expansion

Enel North America continues to expand into new business areas in 2022. The company announced the addition of Enel X Way, a new branch dedicated to electric mobility, and Gridspertise, a power grid modernization business, in North America. Enel is also considering building a large-scale solar photovoltaic panel and cell factory in the United States and launching direct electricity sales in certain unregulated U.S. states. These expansions are part of an overall integrated strategy to take advantage of the opportunities provided by the Inflation Reduction Act to meet market and customer demand.

To meet the growing demand for clean energy, Enel continues to strategically deploy capital to develop energy resources in North America. At its annual investor presentation in November 2022, Enel announced a plan to invest nearly $5 billion in the North American market to develop approximately 5 GW of new renewable and battery energy storage capacity through 2025. In addition, Enel intends to add an additional 155 MW of distributed energy storage and 475,000 environmentally friendly charging points by 2025.
