Endesa is proposing a conversion plan in Spain after the closure of its As Ponte plant. The country has undertaken to close most of its thermal power plants since the European directive on industrial emissions. Thus, the company is proposing an imposing plan for the conversion of jobs and energy production at the As Ponte site.

Endesa remains involved in Galicia

The closure of the As Ponte plant in Galicia is accompanied by a social and economic development plan. In fact, the company wishes to continue to be an industrial reference in the region. To do this, it proposes a plan of 2,682 million euros and the creation of 1,361 jobs.

The plan is presented to the Ministry of Ecological Transition, as well as the regional government of Galicia. It demonstrates its commitment to an energy transition process and value creation in the region. As a result, employees are relocated to other areas such as dismantling or for future projects.

A plan for over 130 people wants to train employees in dismantling. In addition, the conversion of the thermal power plant into a wind farm will provide many jobs. Endesa continues to effectively support Spain’s energy conversion.

Energy conversion and industrial developments

The thermal power plant of As Pontes, converted into a wind farm, will have a capacity of 1,300 MW. The electricity produced by these wind farms will support other industrial projects.

Endesa, for example, has detailed a project with tire manufacturer Sentury Tire. It plans to cede 26 hectares of land in As Pontes to the company for the construction of a tire factory. It will provide additional opportunities for employees to retrain.

Finally, Endesa plans to transfer 45 hectares to a bio-factory for the recovery, development and production of natural fibers.

All these measures are part of the Spanish government’s stated desire to move away from fossil fuels. In 2021, an energy transition law was passed with the aim of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
