Enagás Renovable and VERBUND Green Hydrogen GmbH have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop green hydrogen projects in Spain.
This initiative aims to produce green hydrogen on a large scale in Spanish areas rich in wind and solar resources.
The hydrogen will be exported to the European Union via the H2Med and European Hydrogen Backbone infrastructures, operational around 2030.
VERBUND is already present in Spain, particularly in the hydroelectric sector.

Spain’s hydrogen capabilities

Thanks to its renewable energy resources, Spain is well positioned to become a leader in the production and export of green hydrogen.
That’s why the Spanish government recently approved 800 million euros in subsidies for hydrogen projects.
With its vast expanses of sunshine and impressive wind power capacity, the country has a unique potential for competitively producing green hydrogen on a large scale.
The partnership between the public and private sectors aims to strengthen the local economy by creating jobs, attracting investment and stimulating technological innovation.
In addition, the development of a trans-European transport infrastructure will link Spain to the main hydrogen markets in Europe, facilitating the export and integration of green hydrogen into the European energy network.

Reinforced European infrastructure

The agreement highlights the need for a Europe-wide infrastructure network, connecting the Iberian Peninsula to France and northern Europe.
This connection is essential to create a competitive and secure market for green hydrogen.
Representatives of both companies presented the agreement at the Connecting Green Hydrogen Europe 2024 conference in Madrid.
They stressed the strategic importance of this partnership for the Spanish market and the development of import routes to Central Europe.
This partnership between Enagás Renovable and VERBUND represents a key step in the production and transport of green hydrogen in Europe, consolidating Spain’s position as a major player in this emerging sector and ensuring a sustainable energy transition for the continent.
