Emerge, an energy solutions company created as a joint venture between Masdar and EDF power solutions, has formalised a major agreement with Misk City to develop a 621 kilowatt peak (kWp) rooftop solar plant. The facility, located in the northwest of Riyadh, will supply the site for twenty years and is expected to avoid more than 600 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions per year.

A project integrated into the decarbonisation strategy

This new photovoltaic infrastructure will be installed on a covered parking area and other assets within the site. It will directly support Misk City’s ambition to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification and meet ParkSmart standards for sustainable car park management. The agreement forms part of a broader energy transformation approach, aligned with national policies and the site’s goal of setting a new environmental performance benchmark for urban areas in the Kingdom.

The signing ceremony in Riyadh brought together several representatives, including the Chief Executive Officer of Misk City, the board of Emerge, as well as economic advisers and renewable energy experts.

An urban model focused on innovation and solar energy

Misk City stands out as the first non-profit city of its kind, designed to foster knowledge, creativity and sustainable development within the framework of the Vision 2030 plan. It hosts numerous educational, cultural and digital projects, aspiring to become a regional reference in urban innovation and sustainability. The site aims to fully integrate renewable energy, promote soft mobility and strengthen connectivity within the urban space.

A long-term industrial partnership

The agreement between Emerge and Misk City builds on a collaboration framework established earlier this year. Emerge is responsible for the complete development of the project, including engineering, financing, design, construction, and long-term operation and maintenance. This turnkey model is designed to facilitate access to solar electricity for institutional clients with no initial investment required on their part.

Founded in 2021, Emerge operates across the entire value chain of photovoltaics, battery storage and hybrid solutions, for companies of all sizes and in various environments, whether grid-connected or off-grid.

Commissioning of this plant will enable Misk City to leverage the Kingdom’s solar potential while optimising the energy management of its infrastructures and strengthening its positioning as an innovative urban hub at the regional level.
