Estonian electrolysis technology manufacturer Elcogen has signed a non-exclusive memorandum of understanding with Swiss engineering solutions provider Casale SA, aimed at cooperation in the Power-to-X (P2X) field, including green ammonia production and other hydrogen-integrated industrial applications.

The agreement outlines discussions for integrating Elcogen’s solid oxide electrolysis technology into facilities developed by Casale. Under the terms, Elcogen will supply its technology platform and related technical services to support Casale in designing process solutions for global Power-to-X markets.

A partnership focused on industrial compatibility

According to Elcogen, solid oxide technology offers higher efficiency than proton exchange membrane (PEM) or alkaline electrolysers, using less electricity by leveraging residual heat from industrial processes. This characteristic could significantly reduce the cost of hydrogen production when integrated into infrastructures such as ammonia plants.

Ammonia is currently produced primarily using hydrogen derived from natural gas. Elcogen and Casale aim to replace this feedstock with hydrogen produced via electrolysis, reducing dependence on fossil fuels. Casale, with over a century of experience in plant design, will contribute its large-scale process engineering expertise.

Strategic deployment of Power-to-X solutions

Elcogen stated that its elcoStack® platform allows for simplified integration into industrial processes while maintaining high power density at moderate operating temperatures. This compatibility with existing infrastructure enhances its potential for Power-to-X applications, where on-site hydrogen production serves as both a logistical and economic lever.

Casale confirmed that the collaboration also targets the development of additional Power-to-X energy solutions beyond ammonia, focusing on the needs of industrial developers. The partnership will enable the companies to explore new technological configurations across multiple regions.

“There is strong complementarity between Casale’s process integration expertise and Elcogen’s technology,” said Federico Zardi, Chief Executive Officer of Casale SA, noting that the partnership may open the door to new industrial models within the sector.
