In the sustainable packaging sector, DS Smith has just announced an ambitious project for its Rouen paper mill, aimed at revolutionizing its processes and considerably reducing its carbon footprint.

The new biomass boiler: an energy fulcrum

Scheduled to be fully operational in the first quarter of 2025, the project involves replacing the current coal-fired boiler with a state-of-the-art biomass boiler. The new plant, supplied by Valmet, will have a capacity of 56MW and will generate at least 80% of the site’s heat requirements. This change will result in an impressive reduction of 99,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.

Environmental impact and reduction of CO2 emissions

The boiler will be fuelled by 94,000 tonnes of biofuel, including 30% plant by-products (pulp waste) and 70% reclaimed wood. This approach valorizes waste and contributes to a greener production cycle.

Collaboration and technological innovation

Engie Solutions will play a key role in the operation of this boiler. In fact, this collaboration paves the way for the future installation of a steam turbine capable of producing around 10MW of electricity, offering the prospect of greater energy autonomy for the plant.

Contribution to overall sustainability and long-term objectives

The project is supported by ADEME, the French Environment and Energy Management Agency, and is part of a wider framework of sustainability and environmental responsibility. It is also an important step towards achieving DS Smith’s greenhouse gas emission reduction targets.
The Rouen paper mill, a mainstay of DS Smith’s European operations, plays a central role in the production of recycled paper in France. With this project, the plant continues to demonstrate its leadership in innovation and sustainability.

DS Smith’s investment in Rouen is a striking example of how the packaging industry can be transformed in a sustainable way, combining technological innovation and environmental responsibility. Indeed, this pioneering project paves the way for future eco-responsible initiatives in the sector.
