The 218 MW Cutlass Solar 2 project represents a significant step forward in the Texas renewable energy sector. Built in just 13 months, this ambitious project was delivered ahead of schedule, demonstrating Bechtel’s efficiency and expertise in the field. Covering 1,100 acres, almost half a million solar panels have been installed, reducing CO2 emissions by 600,000 tonnes a year.

Collaboration between Bechtel and Sabanci Climate Technologies

This project marks the second collaboration between Bechtel and Sabanci Climate Technologies, following the successful completion of Cutlass Solar 1 in January 2023. Together, these two facilities will provide clean energy to more than 60,000 Texas homes.

Scott Austin, managing director of renewable energy at Bechtel, expressed his satisfaction: “We’re thrilled to see Cutlass Solar 2 reach full capacity, contributing to America’s energy transition.”

Ismail Bilgin, President of Sabanci Climate Technologies, also stressed the importance of this partnership: “We chose Bechtel for our first solar project because of their expertise. The success of Cutlass Solar 2 confirms that we made the right choice.”

Innovations and advanced construction methods

To meet the project’s ambitious schedule, Bechtel employed state-of-the-art technologies, including data automation, survey robots, machine-controlled equipment and drones. Bechtel’s Digital Execution Center, a first of its kind, enabled fully digital delivery of the project through software integration.

Social impact and employment

At the height of construction, over 300 people were employed on the site, with a remarkable 30% female representation among professional staff and 15% among blue-collar workers – two and a half times the industry average. This diversity testifies to Bechtel’s commitment to inclusion and equal opportunity.

Future prospects

Bechtel and Sabanci Climate Technologies plan to continue their collaboration with the upcoming construction of the Oriana solar installation in Victoria County, Texas, which is expected to provide clean energy to more than 34,000 homes. Sabanci Climate Technologies aims to develop and operate a 1 GW renewable energy portfolio by 2025, focusing on large-scale solar, onshore wind and battery projects.
The Cutlass Solar 2 project represents a crucial step in the expansion of solar energy in Texas. Through technological innovation and a strong partnership, Bechtel and Sabanci Climate Technologies are leading the way towards a more sustainable and resilient energy future.
