Colbún S.A., a key player in Chile’s energy sector, has finalized the purchase of the San Juan and Totoral wind farms. Located in the Atacama and Coquimbo regions respectively, these wind farms represent an installed capacity of 193 MW for San Juan and 46 MW for Totoral. The transaction includes the acquisition of 100% of the shares of Inversiones Latin America Power SpA (ILAP), which holds the companies that own the wind farms. The amount of the transaction is USD 401 million, with possible adjustments in accordance with the usual contractual clauses.
Strategic Expansion in Northern Chile
This acquisition strengthens Colbún’s presence in northern Chile, a strategic region for its operations. In addition to the San Juan and Totoral wind farms, Colbún already operates the Diego de Almagro Sur photovoltaic and battery farm (230 MW) and is building the Horizonte wind farm (816 MW). This concentration of assets enables Colbún to efficiently meet the energy needs of its industrial and mining customers in the region.. Chile had already established partnerships in the wind power sector, notably with Spain.
Impact on the energy market
Colbún’s acquisition of the San Juan and Totoral wind farms increases its installed renewable energy capacity, diversifying its energy portfolio. This diversification is crucial to ensuring a stable energy supply and meeting the growing demands of industrial customers in terms of cost and energy sustainability.
Growth prospects
Completion of this transaction is subject to approval by the Fiscalía Nacional Económica, in accordance with Chilean regulations. This acquisition is part of a series of strategic initiatives by Colbún to strengthen its position in the national energy market. By increasing its renewable energy production capacity, Colbún is preparing to meet the future challenges of the energy sector, while maintaining its competitiveness.
