Chinese group CNOOC Limited (China National Offshore Oil Corporation) has officially launched production at its Dongfang 29-1 gas project, located in the Yinggehai Basin at an average depth of 68 meters. This project, leveraging modern and optimized infrastructure, aims to strengthen the region’s clean energy supply while reducing development costs.

The main production facility includes a new unmanned platform, designed in a standardized and integrated way to maximize efficiency. Once fully operational, the project plans to exploit six development wells, connected via a submarine pipeline to the existing facilities of the Dongfang gas fields.

An ambitious and cost-efficient project

The optimized design of the platform allowed for efficient space utilization while significantly reducing the required investment. The extracted resources will be processed by facilities already in operation, a strategic approach to fully utilize existing capacities while minimizing the costs associated with developing new infrastructure.

By 2025, production is expected to peak at 38 million cubic feet of natural gas per day, further solidifying CNOOC Limited’s position as a key player in the region’s clean energy supply.

Strengthening regional strategy

The project aligns with CNOOC’s strategy to maximize resource potential in the Yinggehai and Qiongdongnan basins. This initiative not only reduces development costs but also ensures a stable and sustainable supply of natural gas to Hainan Island.

Offshore gas fields around the island play a crucial role in China’s energy transition. By commissioning Dongfang 29-1, CNOOC enhances access to reliable and environmentally friendly energy to meet the region’s growing demands.
