CNOOC announces that the Baodao 21-1 gas field has passed the review and registration by the Chinese government.

A major discovery

CNOOC says the Baodao 21-1 gas field is located in the Qiongdongnan basin in the South China Sea. The water depth varies from 660 to 1570 meters. The main gas layer is the Paleogene Lingshui Formation.

The discovery consists of condensed gas reservoirs. Thus, the well reaches a depth of 5188 meters. Once operational, the well discovered by CNOOC could produce an average of 587,000 cubic meters of natural gas per day.

A major gas field

Chinese government agencies certify that natural gas reserves amount to more than 50 billion cubic meters. In addition, the oil reserves would amount to 3 million cubic meters. CNOOC General Manager Zhou Xinhuai says:

“Exploration has always been a priority for CNOOC Limited. We have accelerated the pace of deepwater exploration, targeting the discovery of large and medium-sized oil and gas fields. We have focused on geological theory and technology research to achieve breakthroughs and support our reserve and production growth efforts.”

The Baodao 21-1 gas structure will host the first large deepwater gas field in the South China Sea. This is the largest discovery in the Songnan-Baodao Sag area of the Qiongdongnan basin. CNOOC’s project provides a solid foundation for building a gas production base in the region.
