ChampionX receives EPA approval for methane leak detection technology

ChampionX’s Aerial Optical Gas Imaging (AOGI) platform has received approval from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the alternative methane testing method defined in OOOOb regulations. This approval allows operators in the oil and gas sector to integrate this advanced detection technology into their emission monitoring programmes, enabling them to identify and locate methane leaks more quickly and accurately. The AOGI technology is distinguished by its ability to conduct efficient, large-scale inspections, allowing the monitoring of up to 150 sites per day.

Advancement in emission monitoring

EPA approval marks a significant step for the company, representing the first approval of a platform at the component level for emissions tracking. By employing Optical Gas Imaging (OGI) technology, the AOGI platform provides optimised methane leak detection that meets regulatory requirements. According to Sivasankaran ‘Soma’ Somasundaram, President and CEO of ChampionX, “AOGI represents a new standard in emission monitoring, enabling operators to efficiently meet regulatory requirements while easily integrating the technology into their existing workflows.”

AOGI’s innovation lies in its combination of high-definition OGI technology and an advanced gimbal system, offering unparalleled accuracy in methane leak detection. This platform can be used in various formats, including portable, fixed, aerial, and drone-based systems. Shankar Annamalai, Senior Vice President of emissions technologies at ChampionX, stated that OGI technology is now being used to its full potential for quickly detecting leaks from the air. This reduces the time and costs associated with inspections, while facilitating emission management for companies of all sizes.
