Capstone Infrastructure Corporation announced the commissioning of the 192-megawatt Wild Rose 2 wind farm in Cypress County, Alberta. This project marks the most significant milestone in the company’s power portfolio, which now exceeds 1 gigawatt of installed capacity.
Offtake agreements with private and municipal partners
The project is underpinned by two major long-term power purchase agreements. Capstone Infrastructure Corporation entered into a 15-year electricity offtake deal with Pembina Pipeline Corporation for 105 MW, securing competitively priced power with certified renewable attributes.
In parallel, the City of Edmonton signed a renewable attributes purchase agreement covering 78 MW for over 20 years. This marks the largest long-term renewable energy procurement by any Canadian municipality. The contract is part of the city’s Community Energy Transition Strategy, which aims for carbon neutrality in municipal operations by 2040.
A landmark development for Alberta’s wind sector
Wild Rose 2 stands as one of the largest wind farms currently operational in Alberta. Its commissioning strengthens the role of wind energy within the province’s power mix, historically dominated by fossil fuels.
The project received federal support under the Smart Renewables and Electrification Pathways Program, which promotes low-carbon energy infrastructure and aligns with both provincial and municipal policy frameworks.
Capacity targets and stakeholder involvement
The inauguration ceremony, held at the wind farm site, brought together representatives from Pembina Pipeline Corporation, the City of Edmonton, local landowners, and other project stakeholders.
With the completion of Wild Rose 2, Capstone Infrastructure Corporation reinforces its position within Canada’s renewable energy sector. The company continues to expand its portfolio through projects backed by bilateral agreements, responding to market demand for long-term integrated energy solutions.
