Boralex announces the commissioning of its second energy storage unit in France, installed at the Plouguin wind farm in Brittany. The battery is capable of storing more than 3.3 MWh of energy and was awarded to Boralex after a call for expressions of interest issued by the Regional Council of Brittany in 2019. Co-funded by the European Union via the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the project was approved and supported by the local association Smile (Smart Ideas to Link Energies).

Three specific objectives

The Plouguin storage unit meets three objectives: to consolidate the stability of the French power grid, to support the deployment of high-capacity energy storage and to participate in the integration of renewable energies into the power grid. It aims at balancing production and consumption by taking into account the difference between production and consumption in order to inject into the electrical network, at the most appropriate moment, the energy previously stored.

The battery installed on the Plouguin site complements the wind farm of the same name and is the work of Entech, a company specializing in storage systems and based in Quimper.

Boralex participates in the energy transition

With this commissioning, Boralex is continuing its efforts to progressively deploy a battery energy storage service, thereby taking advantage of the significant cost reduction associated with this technology. The company is a leader in the Canadian market and France’s largest independent onshore wind producer. It is developing a project portfolio of nearly 4 GW in wind and solar power and nearly 800 MW in storage, guided by its values and its corporate social responsibility (CSR) approach.

Through sustainable growth, Boralex is actively participating in the fight against global warming. Boralex’s shares trade on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol BLX.
