BP p.l.c. today announced the appointment of Albert Manifold as chairman of the board. Manifold, the former CEO of CRH plc, will succeed Helge Lund, who will step down from his position on October 1 after seven years of service. Manifold will join BP’s board on September 1 as non-executive chairman-elect.
Albert Manifold’s career
Albert Manifold led CRH from January 2014 to December 2024, during which time he strategically reshaped the company’s portfolio, driving strong growth and financial performance. His leadership was marked by rigorous cost management, disciplined capital allocation, and optimized cash flow generation.
Manifold’s current responsibilities
In addition to his role at BP, Manifold also serves as a non-executive director at LyondellBasell, a global chemicals producer listed on the New York Stock Exchange, and at Mercury Engineering, a leading privately-owned engineering consultancy. He expressed his honor at joining BP, emphasizing the importance of contributing to its development in an increasingly demanding global energy sector.
Reactions from BP executives
Dame Amanda Blanc, BP’s senior independent director, led the succession process and praised Manifold’s capabilities. “His impressive track record of shareholder value creation at CRH makes him the ideal candidate to oversee BP’s next phase,” she said. She also thanked Helge Lund for his leadership during a period of significant transformation for the company.
Albert Manifold stated: “It is an honour to be appointed chairman of one of the world’s great energy companies, and I look forward to working with the leadership team to accelerate the delivery of BP’s strategy and generate sustainable shareholder value.”
