BP announces the end of a gas leak at the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim site
BP has confirmed the cessation of a gas leak at the offshore Grand Tortue Ahmeyim field, located between Senegal and Mauritania. The incident, identified on 19 February at one of the site’s wells, required technical interventions to restore the integrity of the installations.

Energy group BP has announced that it has sealed a gas leak detected at the offshore Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) field, located on the maritime border between Senegal and Mauritania. The operator stated that a sealing device was installed on 12 March, stopping the leakage observed for several weeks. Visual inspections confirmed that the leak had ceased.
A key site for LNG exports
The GTA project is based on a partnership between BP, Kosmos Energy, the Société du pétrole du Sénégal (Petrosen), and the Société mauritanienne des hydrocarbures (SMH). Officially launched on 31 December, production at the site is expected to reach 2.5 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually. The site is designed to meet the growing needs of international markets while contributing to the transformation of the Senegalese and Mauritanian economies.
Ongoing operations and increased monitoring
BP specified that the leak, which occurred at one of the site’s four wells, did not interrupt the activities of the three other wells in production. The company also announced the implementation of additional tests and enhanced monitoring to ensure the integrity of the infrastructure and anticipate potential anomalies.
