The East Yorkshire Solar Farm project has received development consent from the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, confirming the regulatory viability of a site expected to generate 400 megawatts (MW) of solar electricity. This decision marks the second success of a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP) for the BOOM Power team, following the approval of the Cleve Hill Solar Park in 2020.
A centralised review process aligned with NSIP rules
The authorisation request followed the stages of the NSIP process, overseen by the Planning Inspectorate. Following initial public consultations in 2022, the Development Consent Order (DCO) application was accepted for examination in December 2023. The examination concluded in November 2024 and led to a recommendation submitted in February 2025 to the responsible minister, who issued the favourable decision on May 9.
The site, located between Gribthorpe, Spaldington, Wressle, and Howden, is expected to supply electricity to around 100,000 households, according to data provided by the operator. It contributes to the national goal of generating 70 gigawatts (GW) of solar energy by 2035, as part of the roadmap toward net-zero emissions by 2050.
A design shaped by assessments and local commitments
An Environmental Impact Assessment guided the project’s design, incorporating measures such as preserving existing hedgerows, introducing woodland and grassland areas, and establishing ecological corridors along the River Foulness. The development also includes new public footpaths as part of its integration into the local landscape.
Construction is expected to generate local economic benefits, particularly through temporary job creation and indirect support for regional businesses. No financial details on investment costs or construction timelines have yet been disclosed.
Second nationally scaled project for BOOM Power
This is the first project of its kind secured under BOOM Power’s current identity, although the team previously led an NSIP under the name Wirsol Energy Ltd in collaboration with Hive Energy Ltd. That project, Cleve Hill, set a precedent for DCO approval for solar energy infrastructure in the UK.
Mark Hogan, Founder of BOOM Power, welcomed the project’s regulatory outcome, citing the collaborative efforts of all involved partners. Benedikt von Bary, Partner at Pelion Green Future, the lead investor, also confirmed the fund’s long-term commitment to supporting such infrastructure.
