Bloom electrolyzers are high-volume commercial electrolyzers, and Bloom Energy has just inaugurated the production line.

A new industrial technology

The Bloom electrolyzers will leave the Newark, New Jersey plant. The company is thus increasing its electrolyser production capacity to 2GW. To date, this electrolyzer is the most energy-efficient design for producing clean hydrogen.

This technology is based on a solid oxide platform. It is the same as the one used to produce electricity, thus demonstrating their capabilities for the production of hydrogen. Hydrogen will be used in the nuclear and steam power industry.

Bloom electrolysers benefit from the partnership with Xcel Energy and Idaho National Labs. In addition, LSB Industries should also demonstrate its ability to participate in the decarbonization of the industrial and agricultural sectors. The Bloom electrolyzer makes hydrogen economically accessible.

Towards decarbonation

Indeed, this technology allows companies to produce hydrogen up to 45% more efficiently than PEM and alkaline electrolyzers. By operating at elevated temperatures, Bloom electrolyzers consume 15% less electricity when electricity is the only input source. Thus, they can be used in a wide variety of commercial hydrogen applications.

They allow the use of multiple energy sources, including the use of intermittent renewable energy. In addition, Bloom electrolyzers allow excess heat in manufacturing facilities and businesses. Thus, streamlining the production of higher volume electrolyzer allows Bloom to better meet the needs of the market.

Sharelynn Moore, executive vice president and director of business development and marketing for Bloom Energy, states:

“Through domestic production of technologies like Bloom Energy’s electrolyzer, we are making progress toward American energy independence, as well as a sustainable clean hydrogen market, which is critical to decarbonizing industries where it is difficult to reduce CO2 emissions such as the fertilizer, steel, cement and aviation industries.”
