Avina Clean Hydrogen and KBR partner for green ammonia plant in the Gulf of Mexico

KBR’s green ammonia technology selected for Avina Clean Hydrogen’s large U.S. plant.

Avina Clean Hydrogen, a leader in green hydrogen and green fuels, announced its partnership with KBR to develop a green ammonia plant in the Gulf of Mexico in the United States. The agreement calls for KBR to provide the process technology license and engineering design for a base project to produce 2,200 metric tons per day of green ammonia. This is the largest green ammonia project in North America to date.

KBR, a world leader in ammonia technology, has designed and licensed over 250 ammonia plants worldwide since 1943. Its process design includes a fully integrated plant, from water electrolysis and air separation to ammonia synthesis, offering guaranteed performance from energy to ammonia from end to end.

The green ammonia plant in the Gulf of Mexico in the United States has been under development since 2021. It has reached several critical milestones over the past 18 months. In December 2022, the project entered into a takeover agreement with a blue chip customer for 100% of the 100,000 metric ton per year Phase 1 production. When fully developed, the Gulf of Mexico plant will be capable of producing 700,000 metric tons per year of green ammonia.

“We are honored that Avina has chosen our technology for the largest green ammonia project in North America to date,” said Doug Kelly, president of technology at KBR. “This project underscores that green ammonia can be produced economically on a large scale and we look forward to working closely with Avina to ensure a successful implementation.”

Partnership between Avina Clean Hydrogen and KBR: a major step in the development of the green ammonia industry.

For its part, Avina Clean Hydrogen uses a production technology approach to make distributed green hydrogen cheaper than gray hydrogen today. The company has unparalleled expertise in the green hydrogen sector. In addition, it is developing proprietary solutions to integrate intermittent renewable energy with commercially available hydrogen technologies. Avina has planned or is developing 1.5 GW of clean hydrogen plants with some of the world’s largest companies.

“KBR is the global leader in ammonia technology and is extremely well positioned to work collaboratively with innovative companies like Avina to bring this first green ammonia project to the United States,” said Vishal Shah, founder and CEO of Avina Clean Hydrogen.

The announcement of the partnership between Avina Clean Hydrogen and KBR marks a significant milestone in the green ammonia industry, highlighting the potential of green ammonia as a clean energy source that can be economically produced on a large commercial scale.
