Avangrid is developing the first large-scale offshore wind project built by unionized workers in the United States.
Avangrid works with local communities
The company announces that its joint venture, Vineyard Wind, has just signed a Project Labor Agreement (PLA) with Massachusetts Building Trades.
Working with local union affiliates, they will build an 800 MW offshore wind project, Vineyard Wind 1, starting in 2021. Vineyard Wind 1 will be the first large-scale offshore wind project in the United States built with unionized workers.
The agreement guarantees fair, family-friendly wages and comprehensive workplace protections.
In exchange, the PLA guarantees that skilled and qualified workers will be present during construction.
Avangrid: 3500 MW off the coast of Massachusetts
Avangrid is one of the leading developers and operators of onshore wind and solar farms in the United States.
The company is also a pioneer in the development of offshore wind energy in the United States. Vineyard Wind 1 joins a number of concession areas off the coasts of Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
The company is thus capable of supplying up to 3,500 MW of clean energy to the region.
Another major project under development, the Kitty Hawk Offshore Wind, is set to supply 2,500 MW in Virginia and North Carolina.
Vineyard Wind 1 is part of Avangrid’s drive to become one of the leading renewable energy operators in the United States.
In particular, this project marks a rapprochement with local communities.
Another step forward for the company, which supports the UN’s sustainable development goals.
