Arevon Energy, a renewable energy developer, owner, and operator, has officially commenced commercial operations of its Eland 1 Solar-plus-Storage project located in Mojave, Kern County, California. This project, with a capacity of 384 megawatts (MWdc) for solar production and 150 MW/600 megawatt hours (MWh) for energy storage, marks a significant step forward in the state’s energy transition.

Eland 1 is part of a broader initiative: the Eland Solar-plus-Storage Project. The second phase, currently under construction, is expected to become operational in the first quarter of 2025. Together, the two phases will combine 758 MWdc of solar capacity with 300 MW/1,200 MWh of energy storage, making this installation one of the largest of its kind in the nation.

Impact on the community and energy resilience

The integrated design of solar panels and battery storage allows Eland 1 to deliver stable and predictable energy, especially during periods of high electricity demand in Southern California. This model improves grid resilience and addresses critical energy challenges while reducing carbon emissions.

The project has also had a significant impact on the local community. During construction, Eland 1 created 325 full-time equivalent jobs, boosting the regional economy. Local businesses benefited from increased spending, and the project is set to provide over $18 million to local governments throughout its lifespan, funding schools, emergency services, and other community needs.

A model of public-private partnership

Arevon has signed a long-term power purchase agreement with the Southern California Public Power Authority. This agreement will be managed for two members: the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) and Glendale Water and Power. Additionally, engineering, procurement, and construction were handled by SOLV Energy, a San Diego-based firm, reinforcing collaboration between local and national actors.

Future perspectives

The Eland 1 project highlights Arevon’s commitment to clean energy in California. According to Kevin Smith, CEO of Arevon, each initiative in this field aims to provide reliable energy while fostering job creation, revenue, and economic activity. With the commissioning of Eland 2 expected in 2025, the region is set to continue benefiting from these technological and economic advancements.
