The Arctic will be cleaned up with the money from Norilsk Nickel Company’s (Nornickel) Taimyr fuel spill fine.
The company had spilled 20,000 tonnes of fuel into Arctic waters in May 2020.
Arctic partly cleaned up with Nornickel fine
The money from the fine imposed on Russia’s Norilsk Nickel Company will be used to clean up the Arctic.
Norilsk was fined after spilling over 20,000 tonnes of fuel into Arctic waters.
The money will be used to address the ecological damage caused by this incident.
Vladimir Chernyshev, representative of the environmental watchdog group Rosprirodnadzor recently said,
“The government’s decision is that most of the money […] should be used to deal with various problems.”
Generalize these cleaning operations
The money from this fine will be used to clean up the area affected by the Nornickel incident, but not only that.
In fact, the project is also intended to repair previous ecological damage in the Arctic.
To this end, Vladimir Chernyshev hopes that fines of this kind will be systematically used to clean up the Arctic.
An ecological disaster in need of repair
Nornickel’s fine is due to an incident that occurred in Arctic waters in May 2020.
One of the company’s tanks loosened its seal, spilling 20,000 tonnes of fuel into the Taimyr Peninsula.
The Russian company paid around $2 billion to repair the damage.
