Amprion, a transmission system operator in Germany, has unveiled a major strategic initiative by launching a tender for a decentralized grid booster. This project aims to optimize the use of existing infrastructure while reducing the high costs of redispatch interventions. It is based on Section 11a of the German Energy Industry Act (Energiewirtschaftsgesetz, EnWG), which governs initiatives related to modernizing the electricity grid.

Interested companies have until April 3, 2025, to submit their bids after completing the registration process. The required documents are available on Amprion’s website, and participants must sign a confidentiality agreement and complete a contact form. Proposals will be evaluated in summer 2025, with contract awards expected shortly thereafter.

A key initiative for southern Germany

Amprion plans to install this booster at five sites in the Bavarian Swabian region, in partnership with E.ON and LEW Verteilnetz (LVN). These sites will host high-capacity batteries with a total power of 250 megawatts. Southern Germany has been chosen for its central role in managing energy flows within the national grid.

This project will reduce dependency on redispatch, a costly measure used to rebalance the grid during peaks in demand or supply. Currently, such interventions cost the German economy billions of euros annually. The operational launch of the booster, scheduled for 2027, will provide an interim solution while awaiting the completion of grid expansion projects.

A strategy combining flexibility and innovation

Beyond its role in grid stabilization, this project highlights Amprion’s innovation strategy. One of the variants proposed in the tender allows for partial commercial use, thereby increasing return on investment while testing new operational models for energy storage.

This strategic choice reflects Amprion’s commitment to balancing economic efficiency with adaptability to future needs. The evaluation of proposals will consider both technical and economic dimensions, ensuring that the selected model serves network objectives and profitability goals.
