Akuo inaugurates its three Wielowies wind farms in Poland.
A success for the French independent developer and its associate investor Mirova, who are looking to establish a long-term presence in Poland.
Akuo inaugurates its 3 Polish power plants
In 2018, the French company teamed up with investor Mirova, a subsidiary of Natixis, for the tender for Poland’s Wielowies wind power projects.
With a capacity of 132 MW, these power plants should supply almost 200,000 homes with green electricity.
They will also help reduce the country’s carbon emissions by almost 300,000 tonnes.
Poland is often regarded as a bad pupil in the energy transition, and in 2020 was Europe’s second-largest coal consumer, behind Germany.
But the government has recently committed itself to moving away from coal altogether.
Warsaw plans to close 13 coal mines by 2049.
At the same time, the country plans to increase the share of renewables to 27% of its energy mix by 2040.
Strengthen your market presence
Buoyed by this favorable context in Poland and their recent success, Akuo and Minerva have stated their intention to strengthen their involvement in Poland’s energy transition.
The French ambassador in Warsaw has already announced that other similar projects are in the pipeline.
The French company claims sales of €285 million in 2020 and production of 1.2 GW in some 15 countries.
It hopes to double its capacity in the medium term.
This conviction is reinforced by its partnership with Mirova, which represents almost €23.6 billion of investment in the renewable energy sector.
Nevertheless, we must remain vigilant as to whether Polish commitments are respected, given the current gas crisis.
Indeed, it could force Warsaw to delay its gradual phase-out of coal.
