Unit 1 of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant in Turkey is completing the installation of the internal containment (IC) dome. Installed in the design position to complete the sealing loop. The dome structure also includes the steel structure of the sprinkler system maintenance platforms weighing 46 tons. The total weight of the structure lifted by the Liebherr LR 13000 crane was 340 tons.
After the concreting of the dome part of the CI, the final phase of the construction and installation of the external containment will begin. This will include four generators, the hydraulic works on land, the power distribution systems. But also the administrative buildings, the training center, the physical protection facilities of the future nuclear power plant of Akkuyu.

A Russian-Turkish collaboration
The Akkuyu nuclear power plant is the first nuclear power plant under construction in Turkey. The capacity of each nuclear power plant will be 1200 MW.
Currently, the Russian side is financing the project entirely. The Akkuyu nuclear power plant is the world’s first nuclear industry project implemented under the Build-Own-Operate model.
In addition, the Akkuyu nuclear power plant is expected to begin operation in 2025, 7 years after all construction permits and licenses are obtained in 2018.
Turkey maintains its relations with Russia despite the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Sometimes good, sometimes bad, diplomatic relations between the two countries vary according to interests. Therefore, the nuclear power plant in Turkey financed by the Russian side is an opportunity for Turkey. Indeed, it allows to maintain relations with Russia despite Turkey’s membership in NATO.
