Air Liquide Production Durable Biométhane

In May 2024, Air Liquide announced the publication of a new charter for sustainable biomethane production, drawn up in partnership with industry experts and WWF France. This charter, which goes beyond current regulations, aims to measure and monitor progress towards more sustainable production, while contributing to the establishment of global standards.

The potential of biogas

Biogas, produced by the decomposition of organic waste, is a promising source of renewable energy. Its production, through anaerobic digestion, yields biomethane and biogenic CO2, which can be captured and reused. This process also generates a natural fertilizer, offering an integrated solution for energy production, waste management and agriculture.

The four pillars of the charter

Air Liquide has defined a comprehensive methodology based on four pillars to ensure sustainable biomethane production: energy transition, agroecological practices, local ecosystems and the circular economy, and biodiversity and risk prevention.

A collaborative commitment

This charter is the fruit of collaborative work between Air Liquide and WWF France, integrating sustainability performance indicators into the Group’s investment governance. The charter serves as a roadmap to ensure that each project respects these fundamental principles.

Future prospects and developments

Air Liquide and WWF France have published a summary of the main findings of this collaboration on their website, aimed at promoting sustainable practices in the biogas industry and initiating new discussions within the ecosystem.

Management comments

Armelle Levieux, a member of Air Liquide’s Executive Committee, said:

“The success of the energy transition requires joint efforts and shared standards worldwide. Air Liquide is committed to playing a leading role in the development of sustainable biomethane production.”

Marie-Christine Korniloff, WWF France’s Business Director, added that:

“We welcome Air Liquide’s proactive approach to progressing towards more sustainable biomethane production, thus contributing to a sustainable expansion of renewable energies.”
