AES to supply Google in Virginia for 10 years

AES will supply Google in Virginia for 10 years.
The partnership, which is due to begin in 2021, will enable Google to meet its decarbonization targets set in 2020.
The goal: to use 100% carbon-free energy by 2030.
A dream come true for Virginia’s data centers.
According to Michael Terrell, Google’s Director of Energy,

« Not only is this partnership with AES an important step towards Google’s goal of 24/7 carbon-free energy, but it also sets a model for other companies looking to decarbonize their own operations. Our hope is that this model can be replicated to accelerate the transition to clean energy. « 

A 500 MW portfolio, an investment of $600 million

To meet Google’s energy needs, AES has developed a 500 MW clean energy portfolio, based on its own assets and those of third-party developers.
The majority of the energy used will be wind, solar, hydroelectric and battery storage resources.
The project will cost around $600 million and is expected to generate a further 1,200 jobs.
AES and Google are thus continuing their alliance begun in November 2019.
At the time, their aim was to use Google Cloud technology to drive innovation in energy distribution and advance clean energy production.
Today, their new project goes further and gives carbon-free energy a central place.
